3 Exercises for Cervical Disc Bulges

3 Exercises for a Cervical Disc Bulge Injury

Hoppers Crossing Sports & Spinal

A cervical disc bulge can be painful, frustrating, and limiting in everyday life. Whether you are dealing with neck stiffness, headaches, pain travelling into the shoulder or arm, or tingling and numbness, the right rehabilitation exercises can help reduce symptoms and improve recovery.

At Hoppers Crossing Sports & Spinal, we regularly help patients from Hoppers Crossing, Werribee, Point Cook, Tarneit, Truganina, Laverton and Altona Meadows recover from cervical disc injuries with osteopathy, rehabilitation exercises, and hands-on treatment.

Below are 3 commonly prescribed exercises that may help improve neck mobility, posture, and muscular support for a cervical disc bulge.

What is a Cervical Disc Bulge?

A cervical disc bulge occurs when one of the discs in the neck protrudes outward and irritates nearby joints, muscles, or nerves. This can happen due to:

  • Poor posture
  • Repetitive desk work
  • Heavy lifting
  • Sporting injuries
  • Whiplash
  • Degenerative changes

Common symptoms may include:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Pain into the shoulder blade or arm
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Reduced neck movement

An accurate diagnosis and rehabilitation plan from an Osteopath or healthcare practitioner is important before starting exercises.

1. Chin Tucks

Chin tucks help improve deep neck flexor strength and reduce forward head posture, which often contributes to cervical disc irritation.

How to Perform:

  1. Sit or stand tall.
  2. Gently draw your chin backwards as if making a “double chin.”
  3. Keep your eyes level.
  4. Hold for 5 seconds.
  5. Repeat 10 times.

Benefits:

  • Improves posture
  • Reduces neck strain
  • Activates deep stabilising muscles
  • May reduce nerve irritation

2. Cervical Extension Retractions

This exercise may help reduce symptoms caused by certain cervical disc bulges by encouraging movement away from sensitive nerve structures.

How to Perform:

  1. Begin in a seated position.
  2. Gently retract your chin backwards.
  3. Slowly look upward toward the ceiling.
  4. Return to the starting position.
  5. Repeat 8–10 repetitions.

Important:

Stop the exercise if symptoms significantly worsen or travel further down the arm.

Benefits:

  • Improves neck mobility
  • Helps centralise symptoms
  • Encourages disc movement away from irritated nerves

3. Scapular Retractions

The shoulder blades and neck work closely together. Poor upper back posture can place extra stress on the cervical spine.

How to Perform:

  1. Sit or stand tall.
  2. Gently squeeze your shoulder blades backwards and down.
  3. Hold for 5 seconds.
  4. Relax and repeat 10–15 times.

Benefits:

  • Improves posture
  • Reduces upper neck tension
  • Supports cervical spine mechanics
  • Helps decrease strain from desk work
